for Friday, we have this
the following was a comment in response to a blog question about movie roles... something like who reminds you of you relating to characters in fiction... besides the obvious like The Lorax, The Cat in the Hat, Bugs Bunny, Roger Rabbit and Wacko Warner, I attempted to take the question seriously using human characters and stories in spite of their limitations... I left out a lot... Douglas Adam's Hitchhiker's Guide comes to mind... many others (heck, I didn't even explore the female roles that remind me of me... or literature or musical theatre or songs that can delve so much deeper)... often it's not an individual character, but a merging of personalities, the dialogue, and the message the author appears to be trying to convey... but anyway, as skewed as it must be and some essentials left out, this is what came of my first thoughts on the question:
I thought and thought and still must think some more...
vague references come into view and I'll share them now, but this is a superficial skimming of what floats to the surface upon first consideration of your question... essential representative characters, roles, and words are without doubt, missing...
Robin Williams (Chris Nielson) in What Dreams May Come
...What some folks call impossible, is just stuff they haven't seen before
...It's not about understanding... it's about *not* giving up!...
...This is the guy who doesn't give up...
...And you'll have the satisfaction that you didn't give up. That has to be enough...
...Sometimes, when you lose, you win...
more and other Robin Williams roles The Fisher King, Hook, Patch Adams, Mrs. Doubtfire and still others...
...C'mon, Jack, what do you think the Crusades were? A Pope's publicity stunt?...
...to live would be an awfully big adventure...
...You treat a disease, you win, you lose. You treat a person I'll guarantee you'll win...
... love you without knowing how, or when, or from where. I love you straightforwardly without complexities or pride. I love you because I know no other way then this. So close that your hand, on my chest, is my hand. So close, that when you close your eyes, I fall asleep...
...And if we bury you ass up, I have got a place to park my bike...
...I admire that honesty, Natalie, that's a noble quality. Never lose that, because it often disappears with age, or entering politics...
...It was a run-by fruiting...
Peter Sellers (Chance Gardener) in several Being There, The Bobo, and as Clouseau
...This is just like television, only you can see much further...
...I like to watch...
others...
Gene Barry (Georges) and George Hearn (Albin) in La Cage Aux Folles
...look over there...
Pippin in Pippin ... ...rivers belong where they can ramble...
Quixote in Man of La Mancha
...to dream the impossible dream...
V in V For Vendetta
...This may be the most important moment of your life. Commit to it...
...I'm not questioning your powers of observation I'm merely remarking upon the paradox of asking a masked man who he is...
...while the truncheon may be used in lieu of conversation, words will always retain their power. Words offer the means to meaning, and for those who will listen, the enunciation of truth. And the truth is, there is something terribly wrong with this country, isn't there? Cruelty and injustice, intolerance and oppression. And where once you had the freedom to object, to think and speak as you saw fit, you now have censors and systems of surveillance coercing your conformity and soliciting your submission. How did this happen? Who's to blame? Well certainly there are those more responsible than others, and they will be held accountable, but again truth be told, if you're looking for the guilty, you need only look into a mirror. I know why you did it. I know you were afraid. Who wouldn't be? War, terror, disease. There were a myriad of problems which conspired to corrupt your reason and rob you of your common sense. Fear got the best of you, and in your panic...
...Your powers of observation continue to serve you well...
...But what I hope most of all is that you understand what I mean when I tell you that, even though I do not know you, and even though I may never meet you, laugh with you, cry with you, or kiss you, I love you. With all my heart, I love you...
...ideas are bulletproof...
...A revolution without dancing is a revolution not worth having!...
...People should not be afraid of their governments. Governments should be afraid of their people...
...Concerning non-violence: It is criminal to teach man not to defend himself when he is the constant victim of brutal attacks...
...Sex and Race, because they are easy, visible differences, have been the primary ways of organizing human beings into superior and inferior groups and into the cheap labour on which this system still depends. We are talking about a society in which there will be no roles other than those chosen, or those earned. We are really talking about Humanism...
Ronald Coleman (Sidney Carlton) in Tale of Two Cities
...It's a far, far better thing I do than I have ever done. It's a far, far better rest I go to than I have ever known...
someday I'd like to find the time to really think about this...
and someday, I hope I will...

You know, the first time I saw "What Dreams May Come" it tore my heart out (because the actress/character really reminded me of my mom - in both appearance and behavior).
But then I had to see it again. And again. And although love is giddy and ethereal and precious, it is also penetrating and daunting and worthy of self-sacrifice.
I wonder if the kind of love that character had for his wife really exists, or if it is just the beautiful dream of the writer. I honestly believe that if I truly loved someone, I would go to those extremes to rescue them. ...I guess I just answered my question. :)
it exists in me, my ultimate dream, the kind of love I want to give most and the kind of love I dream of receiving, so yes it exists, and yes you did answer your own question too :)
and come to think of it (as if I didn't know what I was leaving out) I didn't even list Wesley's character and as you wish and other classic lines...
Random Harvest comes to mind...
Always and Forever Young and Starman and Little Man Tate and a bunch of others too...
I think this is actually a really awesome question to ask and to think about. When I think about the myriad of different characters in movies that remind me of myself, it is sort of astonishing...it makes you wonder about how many different personalities really do reside in all of us, because I can just as easily identify a part of myself with a romantic, soft character, as I can with a child character as I can with a sensual, wild, complex character as I can with a socially active (and borderline angry) character ... and on and on and on.
I like this question a lot actually....and am filing it away to think on it too :)
YAY :)
I look forward to the output of your mind :)
