wonderful day
MUSIC: fleetwood mac - rumours
well, even though i miss you, it was a wonderful day... except for losing to the what was, last year, the worst team in the sunday league with my new supposedly competitive division team who started off the first inning on fire and just as suddenly died and very surprisingly lost 5-4 (and all five runs we gave up were on errors on what should have been easy catches or throws for easy outs)... i grounded into a fielder's choice and popped out to the shortstop in my two times at bat, so that surely did not help, but i am far from the best hitter on the team, supposedly, and we simply folded up and went home... so ths team that was supposedly going to be in the competitive division and, according to the coach, was put into the recreational division by mistake, is currently the worst team in the recreational division... on a more personal (re: selfish) note, they got me a large uniform when i asked for an extra large and i had to cut the bottom of the pants to fit over my calves and shin pads and the shirt will only fit comfortably if i drop threty or so pounds and pitching and hitting suffers when i am distracted by the discomfort of the uniform and if it shrinks i won't be wearing it and the coaches didn't seem to care much (or pay much attention to the game itself, actually, which definitely helped us lose... i guess they are learning too and have a ways to go), but aside from that , it was a wonderful day...
after the game i drove over to the bob carr center to see the red chair affair (a benefit for the arts in orlando that presents a sampling of many of the shows in town, including cirque de soliel and blue man group - each almost a hundred bucks a ticket for their whole show, and the orlando ballet, philharmonic, shakespeare theatre, opera, and a lot more)... i got there early and parked and started changing clothes and noticed i had forgotten the shirt... i talked the parking attendant into letting me leave and come back without paying again (i later found out they had free valet parking for the event at another parking area, alas) and rushed to a nearby mall where i found a store about to close and picked up a $50 silk shirt (on sale) cuz that's all they had that even remotely appealed to me (save money?... well, the timing is poor, but it is about time i wore something that was not bought at walmart) and headed back to the event and waited for the crowd that was going to meet me there and watched the rich snobs of orlando hob knob at the pre-event reception and realized that, while i enjoy the arts and love creativity, i chose never to really enter or try to belong in that world (even when i had the money to be a patron/benefactor) because most of them they really do co-dependently share the delusion that they are better and more privileged than most everybody else... and i don't even have sour grapes to stomp except for the fact that it was hot outside waiting...
the show was pretty good, at times excellent, but still small town culture compared to my nyc roots... nyc spoils an artistic palate for anywhere else, not because the people are better or more provolehed, but because the talent is better and there is so much more of it than just about anywhere else in the world... after all, most cities have one big event center that has broadway road shows, and if a city does have a philharmonic opera and/or ballet company, it's usually in the same auditorium... nyc has many dozens of such auditoriums to choose from which specially built spaces for each of the performing arts based on acoustic and visual specifics for that particular art... and once again as i usually do when i venture intoi the art world of anywhere i live, i miss this aspect of nyc... but there are still enough reasons for me not to live there so elsewhere i remain...
by now you may be wondering just what sort of wonderful day this could possibly have been... well, you just had to be there (and have to really understand me and my perspective) or you just have to believe me, it was a wonderful day...
after the show, about half the group (forty plus people i knew showed up for the show) went to the cheesecake factory for dessert... i had two, since i didn't have dinner and actually, i don't think i ate today... so why am i not starting to go to the gym each night, especially on weekends, with the laptop, and check on email and blogs and such and such while getting back into a workout routine so i can start dropping this extra weight i carry around?...
ummm, it was a wonderful day really it was :)
